SARGE DUBOIS

“Daddy, can we get our nails done next?” I looked at Sarya and slowly began to die on the inside. We were having our daddy daughter day I made sure to have with her every week, but this time she threw me for a loop. I wasn’t ready for her to do all of that shit yet.

“What you know about getting your nails done? Yours is already perfect.”

“Clara got hers done and Joshua liked them. Said it made her look like a big girl. Clara was smiling hard, and I was rolling my eyes because even though she had them done in my favorite color her fingers are ugly.” I opened and closed my mouth stunned. I had no idea what to say to her.

“Cupcake, it’s okay to want to be pretty for yourself. You never go out of your way to change for someone else. Understand?”

“Didn’t you put on your favorite suit to make Aria smile?” I wanted to tell her to mind her damn business, instead I laughed hard as hell.

“You’re getting too smart. Look, it’s okay to want to make someone smile. It’s not okay to do it to try and get them to choose you. Don’t change who you are to make someone else happy.” She looked confused and I felt like shit.

“How is polishing my nails changing who I am? I’m still Ya Ya, right? Just with pretty nails.” This was why kids shouldn’t date. I was ready to go to Joshua’s house and beat his ass.

“It doesn’t baby. We can go get our nails done. Do you happen to have Joshua’s phone number? Maybe we can invite him over for a play date.” The way her face lit up had me ready to kill him. She typed his number in my phone fast as hell. Fuck beating his ass. I wasn’t ready for my baby to grow up and I damn sure wasn’t prepared for her to get her heart broken.

As I drove towards the salon, I thought about what Melanie said to me. I’ve probably hurt a lot of women in my life, and I didn’t give a fuck about karma. If that shit tried to come back to me through my daughter, everybody was going to pay. Parking my car, I got out, and then grabbed her out. We walked inside and the receptionist Jennifer ran over to me.

“Sarge, I wasn’t aware that you had an appointment. Let me clear someone out of a chair and you will be seated in a minute.” I waved her off letting her know it was fine.

“It’s all good, me and baby girl can wait. I need to make a call.” Jen grabbed Ya Ya’s hand and pulled her out of the chair.

“Why don’t we let daddy handle his business and you come with me. You can find what color you want and help me get the stuff for your chair.”

“I already know I want pink and purple. Clara only had pink, so mine will be better.
